(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) — The Central Missouri Jennies, 13-0, 3-0 MIAA, came back to win against the Truman Bulldogs in five sets, 12-25 10-25 25-17 25-22 20-18, according to a press release.
Truman, 6-5, 1-1 GLVC, held Central Missouri to only 12 points in the first set, leading the Jennies for the entire set. The Jennies came close to catching Truman at 6-5, but Truman went on to win 16 points while allowing the Jennies to win only one point from a kill by Maddie Jones. The Jennies made a small come back in the last few points of the match, but Truman finished the set with a kill.
The Bulldogs came out just as strong in the second set of the match, leading the Jennies from the start and holding them to under ten points through the match. The match was close to start, Truman only leading the Jennies by a point at 4-3 before really taking over the set. The Bulldogs won eleven of twelve points to follow, losing only one point on a service error to give the Jennies a point at 8-4, before winning seven more points. The Jennies were unable to score more than two points at once, ultimately losing the set with an attack error from Carly Sojka.
Although the third set started with Truman ahead, Central Missouri fought back to win five consecutive points with three service aces by Julia Bates, and taking the lead at 8-4. The Jennies did not let Truman close the gap from the rest of the set, winning one and two points at a time, before a kill by Taylor Goodness won the Jennies their first set of the night at 25-17.
After changing the momentum of the match in the third set, the Jennies made it clear they were not going to lose without a fight, and the fourth set was nothing short of a battle. The Jennies and Bulldogs both won a point back and forth through the first nine points of the match, the Jennies leading 5-4. Truman took over the Jennies lead after catching the Jennies at 7-7, but Central Missouri did not let them run away with the set. The Jennies caught Truman at 13-13, this time winning six of seven points to take the first significant lead of the set at 18-14. The Bulldogs caught the Jennies again at 20-20, but the Jennies didn’t let them have the lead, winning three of the following four points, to bring the score to 23-21. The Jennies allowed Truman only one more point, before finishing the set with a kill by Bates at 25-22.
The fifth and final set of the match was just as action packed as the previous set. The Jennies won their first three points of the set with kills from Goodness, Sojka, and Haley Thompson, at 3-1. Both teams won one and two points at a time, Truman catching the Jennies twice at 3-3 and 7-7 before taking the lead at 9-8. Truman almost won the match at 14-11, but the Jennies were able to string together four points in a row to take the lead at 15-14. From that point on Truman was unable to take the lead over the Jennies. Central Missouri would score a point, and Truman would just catch them before the Jennies would score again. The final two points of the match came from a kill by Bates, and a Truman attack error.
Goodness finished the night with the team high 14 kills. Bates also had 36 assists, five kills, and four serving aces on the night.
In their next match the Jennies will take on another conference team, Missouri Western. The match is this Friday in Warrensburg at 7 p.m.
