Dr. Herbert R. Eschliman

Dr. Herbert R. Eschliman, 87, of Warrensburg, Missouri, died Monday, Aug. 4, at his residence.

Following cremation, an informal memorial gathering will be held at the home, 208 Hillcrest Drive, from 8-10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16.

Herb Eschliman was born in Freeman, South Dakota, to Alvin Eschliman and Anna Mary (Allgyer) Eschliman on Oct. 31, 1926. He married Verlyn “Lynn” Thomson in 1951, and they moved to Warrensburg in 1960.

A retired English language, literature, and composition teacher at the college level, he taught for 37 years, most of that time at UCM. He was head of the Language and Literature Division and the first head of the English Department when that became a separate entity. He began team teaching, started a tutorial program for all composition students, and designed the office complex in the Martin Building.

A staff sergeant in the CIC during World War II, he received a Bachelor of Arts from Dakota Wesleyan University, a Master of Arts from the University of South Dakota, and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He was a member of the Modern Language Association, the Missouri Philological 
Association, the Missouri Academy of Science, the Sierra Club, the Nature Conservancy, the National Parks Conservation Association, Earth Justice, the American Tree Farm System, the Missouri Nut Growers Association and was a lifetime supporter of other conservation issues.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Sharon Eschliman of Warrensburg; three daughters, Paula Eschliman of Dallas, Texas; Patty Eschliman of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Becky Axton and son-in-law, Tony, of Windsor, Missouri; five grandsons, Bryan Eschliman, Danny Eschliman, Chris Eschliman, Alan Eschliman and Travis Axton; two granddaughters, Lauren Eastman and Jessica Axton; three great-grandsons, Aaron, Devon and Caden Eschliman; two great-granddaughters, Abby and Maci Eschliman; and stepmother-in-law, Lenore Thomson of Arlington, S.D. Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Lynn, and his sister, Pauline Swanberg, of Del Mar, California.
