(Editor’s Note: The original version of this story incorrectly stated the starting location for the CROP Walk. The walk begins at the First Methodist Church.)

Organizers kicked off fundraising efforts for the Johnson County/Warrensburg CROP Hunger Walk Saturday, Sept. 22 with a community breakfast at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.

More than 70 people attended, generating about $550 for the CROP Hunger Walk, which takes place Oct. 14, according to a news release.

Expenses were offset by donations of eggs from the Johnson County Egg Farm; biscuits from restaurant owners Eric and Vickie Christie, of Appleton City; pancakes, gravy and sausage from First Christian Church; meat from CROP Walk committee chair Greg Turner; and orange juice from Stan Dollar, a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, which donated the use of its kitchen and dining room as well.

Recruiters are seeking participants and donors for the three-mile walk, which begins at 3 p.m. Oct. 14, with registration at 2 p.m. at the First Methodist Church. Some 25 percent of the proceeds go toward Warrensburg Food Center, and 75 percent goes to Church World Service, an ecumenical group that serves the needy all over the world.

Last year, the walk raised $11,600 – nearly $3,000 of which went to the food center, according to the news release. Since 2004, the walk has raised nearly $84,000 and drawn more than 1,900 walkers.
