Jennies volleyball captures share of MIAA title

(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) — The No. 5 Central Missouri Jennies captured a share of the MIAA Championship with a 25-9, 25-18, 27-25 sweep of Fort Hays State on Saturday afternoon at the UCM Multipurpose Building. The conference title is the fourth in the last five years, and the 23rd in school history.

The Jennies (29-1, 15-1 MIAA)  won seven points in a row early in the first set to take a 9-2 lead over the Tigers (14-19, 3-13 MIAA), Haley Thompson with three kills in the streak. The Jennies had at least a six point lead over the Tigers  for the remainder of the set, and scored the final five of six points in the set. Taylor Goodness had four kills, and hit .571 in the set. Thompson hit .600 in the set, with three kills.

The Jennies held a three point lead over the Tigers for a majority of the second set. Fort Hays State held the Jennies at 17 for three points, and again at 18 to tie up the set. The Jennies then scored six points in a row to finish the set. Mikalee Monachino had two serving aces in the set. Goodness had another four kills.

Fort Hays State started set three with a four point lead. and held the lead for almost the entire third set. The Jennies held the Tigers at set point for four points, tying the set up at 24-24. Fort Hays scored one more point in the set, but the Jennies then scored three in a row to finished the match. Sojka had nine kills in the final set of the match, and hit .533.

Sojka finished the match with 13 kills, hit .407, and had three blocks. Goodness had 11 kills and a block. Thompson had 10 kills, and three blocks. Becca Blaise had eight kills, a serving ace and a block. Maddie Jones had two kills, and four blocks. Julia Bates had 32 assists, eight kills, two serving aces and a block. Annie Reilly had 15 digs and two serving aces.

The Jennies will be the No. 1 seed in the MIAA Tournament, and play a still to be determined opponent, on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the UCM Multipurpose Building.
