(WARRENSBURG, Mo., digitalBURG) — The streetscape work underway on Holden Street was set back some due to the flooding earlier this month, but city officials say the project is wrapping up.

Construction started in February on the project, which extends from the railroad tracks to Grover Street, and was estimated to take about 60 days. William Graves, project manager for the city, said the flooding washed out an entire block of newly laid concrete. However, he said the construction crew was able to get caught up.

The crew is scheduled to install brick pavers on Monday lay asphalt on Tuesday.

KCP&L is now installing street lights, which is scheduled to wrap up by April 26. Graves said the project is on track to be finished by May 1.

The construction has periodically shut down Holden Street, which has affected at least one business on the street. Guy Albert, owner of Impulse Boutique at the corner of Holden and Commercial streets, said business is down.

“It’s had a profound effect on our traffic because it’s really difficult to get in and out, so it has had a profound effect on the number of customers and sales,” Albert said.

Impulse Boutique is open during the construction, but Albert said they have been closing early. He said the city has worked with them on opening Holden Street during the weekends.

Julie Turnipseed, executive director of Warrensburg Main Street Inc., said the project is good for downtown.

“We think it’s a very positive thing to continue this remodelization to be able to connect to campus,” she said.

Graves said future projects could extend the streetscape work around the Johnson County Courthouse.
