(ST. JOSEPH, Mo., AP) — Bayer Corp. plans to close its animal health products plant in St. Joseph, costing 130 employees their jobs.

The company said in a statement Tuesday the plant would close by mid-year but sales of the products made there would continue until the inventory is gone.

Bayer said in February that it was looking for a buyer for parts of the Bayer HealthCare operation, which it bought from Teva Pharmaceutical.

The Kansas City Star reports (http://bit.ly/1K4pWAq ) Bayer earlier announced plans to invest $6.5 million in the plant and received offers for state and local incentives. However, the company decided not to pursue those incentives.

Bayer said a changed market left it with excess capacity and prompted the decision to close the plant.
