Melvin Lester Slaughter, 86, of Kingsville, Missouri, died Thursday, Oct. 26, at home. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 30 at Blue Springs Assembly of God with Rev. John Martz officiating.
Interment will follow at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens in Grain Valley with Full Military Honors provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars, Memorial Post 5844 and Munday-Hancock Post 90, American Legion. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Ryan Reynolds, Joshua Slaughter, Nathan Snow, Greg Maupin, Dylan Burks and Jake Vansell.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Williams Funeral Chapel in Holden.
Melvin was born May 25, 1931, in New London, Missouri, son of Albert Eugene Slaughter and Chattie Marie (Flowers) Slaughter. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was united in marriage to Iva “Irene” Lowry on June 5, 1955, in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. The couple resided in Lee’s Summit briefly before moving to California and Oak Grove. In 1965, they moved to a farm near Kingsville, Missouri. Melvin was a forklift operator with General Motors for the majority of his adult life and he also farmed. He retired from GM in 1987, but continued farming for several more years. Melvin enjoyed wood working, fishing, especially at Truman Lake and Stockton Lake, and traveling.
Survivors include four children: Kathern Martin and husband, Mario of Atlanta, Georgia; Stephen Slaughter and wife, Susan of Overland Park, Kansas; Sandra Snow and husband, Brian of Lone Jack; and Lisa Burks and husband, Ken of Kingsville, Missouri; sister: Pauline Beall and husband, Harold of Centerview, Missouri; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Irene; four sisters: Hazel Powell, Florence Lowe, Delphia Howell and Helen Occhipinto; and brother: Lloyd Slaughter.
