Story by Alex Agueros, for The Muleskinner—
Mules head basketball coach Kim Anderson has been elected to the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. The Hall features hundreds of distinguished members such as former Kansas University basketball coach, Phog Allen, and St. Louis Cardinal’s legend, Stan Musial.
Anderson is one of 15 people who will be inducted this year.
Anderson played college basketball at the University of Missouri, and led the Tigers to a Big 8 Championship and an Elite Eight appearance. While at Mizzou, Anderson played under fellow Missouri Sports Hall of Fame inductee, Norm Stewart. Anderson also had a 20-game stint with the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1978-79 season.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to have great coaches, great administration and support from my family,” Anderson said.
As head coach of the Mules, Anderson has won 226 games in 10 seasons. He’s presided over two Division-II Final Four appearances and three MIAA Tournament titles.
“I got into coaching and was fortunate to work for Gene Iba at Baylor,” he said. “To be able to come into Central Missouri and work with our administration, who’s been very supportive, has been a great situation.”
Looking ahead, only a national title eludes Anderson.
“The goal for all of us is to win a national championship,” he said. “I think that’s everyone’s ultimate goal. We’ve knocked on the door twice, and hopefully someday we can get that done.”
This considerable honor not only reflects excellence for Anderson, but also the University.
“I want to give credit to my family and our administration, Jerry Hughes and Dr. Ambrose,” he said. “We have a lot of great fans and good student support. That’s what makes it all possible.”
Induction ceremonies will take place Sunday, Jan. 27 at the University Plaza Hotel & Convention Center in Springfield, Mo.
