The African Student Association is organizing its first African Zumba class, also known as Afro Zumba.
The class is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Room M167A.
Afro Zumba is a fitness workout with an African twist led by Rebecca Akano, sophomore and ASA social media coordinator, and Chelsea Osei, junior and ASA membership coordinator.
Afro Zumba will consist of different dances from the West African regions.
“We incorporated dances mainly from West Africa because that is where Rebecca and I are from,” Osei said.
Akano said the class will take approximately one hour with two Afrobeat songs to practice.
“I picked the songs ‘Wo!!’ by Olamide and ‘Sample You’ by Lil Kesh to dance to because they are hype, upbeat and easy to catch the beat to,” Akano said.
Osei said having an Afro Zumba class on campus will bring diversity and showcase the ASA organization.
“We heard of a lot of Zumba classes taking place here on campus but we’ve never seen African Zumba,” Osie said.
She said the timing for the class fits well with spring break in a couple weeks.
“This class will be a perfect workout for students and will help get your calories down before spring break,” Osei said.
The Afro Zumba class is free and open to all UCM students, faculty and staff.
