Allan Ray Thompson, age 66, of Warrensburg, Missouri, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, at
Kansas City Veterans Hospital.
After bedside services at the Veterans Hospital, cremation is planned under the direction of
Sweeney-Phillips and Holdren Funeral Home. Donations for Veterans Affairs may be made in
his name in lieu of flowers or other gifts and can be left in care of the funeral home.
Allan was born in Chicago, Illinois, on Jan. 19, 1951, the only son and first child of Raymond
E. Thompson and W. Nadine Willcuts. He was raised in North Salem, Missouri, and helped his father
on the farm when not in school. Early years on the farm instilled the love of nature, animals and
especially horses for Allan. Elementary and secondary school was completed in Raytown, Missouri, where Allan loved playing football as #32 at Raytown High School, graduating in 1969.
Allan was a veteran of the Vietnam Era. He attended Central Missouri State University for a year
until he was drafted and chose to join the U.S. Marines. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and
served from Sept. 17, 1970, to Sept. 16, 1972.
Allan was vivacious and fun loving, never meeting a stranger. He enjoyed Bodi’s Bar and listening to Diamond Jim during the years before frequenting Knuckleheads and other “watering holes” near Westport later in the ‘90s. Al always enjoyed organized trail rides or amateur fast pitch leagues with friends. He was a sports fanatic and enjoyed watching the Chiefs, Royals, NFL, and college sports. Tailgating and KC BBQ contest were always fun for him. He also enjoyed riding horses and participaed in Central Missouri University Homecoming parade for many years; rounding out the afternoon letting children ride his horse Piccolo for hours after the parade. In recent years, he enjoyed listening to bands at Friday Happy Hour and going to the movies.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond E. Thompson and Nadine Willcuts, and Don
Willcuts. He is survived by his sister, Vicki (Greg) Werntz and nephew Dillon Werntz of
Warrensburg, niece April (Marvin) Browning and nephew Cole Sage of Olathe, Kansas. He is also
survived by the oldest sister, Amber (Charles) Sullivan of Odessa, MO and niece Crystal McClain of Colorado.
