(JOPLIN, Mo., AP) — It’s been 150 years since Confederate guerrillas ambushed a black regiment at a Civil War battle site a few miles north of Joplin.

And dozens of people turned out over the weekend to mark the anniversary. Along with re-enactors, a Missouri Southern State University read a first-person account about the May 18, 1863, massacre. Killed in the 10-minute battle were 15 soldiers of the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry and three white soldiers from the 2nd Kansas Volunteer Artillery Battery.

The Joplin Globe (http://bit.ly/13EExii) reported that the five acres of land where the skirmish took place was purchased by the Jasper County Commission in 2009.

A committee is working to raise $100,000 to establish a living history homestead.
