The recently resurrected Arcade Magazine will open submissions for its 13th issue on Nov. 1.

Arcade is a literary publication operated by students and faculty in UCM’s school of English and Philosophy and allows creative writers and visual artists on campus to have their work published. Student editors also gain publishing experience.

Previous Arcade contributor and Cecilia Zavala returned to campus last year to find that the magazine was not being published.

“When I inquired about Arcade at that time, I learned that the magazine had been all but abandoned,” she said. “The previous two editors had graduated, and it was in danger of disappearing.”

She collaborated with poet and assistant professor of English Jenny Molberg to bring the magazine back. hey published a double issue last spring with new submissions from the 2018-2019 school year and previously accepted but unreleased material originally slated to be published in 2017.

They dubbed this return their “phoenix issue,” as it was a rebirth for the publication. This year’s issue will also be an important one.

“Our next issue is our 15th-anniversary issue, so we’ll be doing some really special things,” Zavala said. “One of the things we’ve got in the works is a cover contest.”  

The specifics of the cover contest and other anniversary plans are not yet finalized, but readers can stay updated through Arcade’s Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @MagazineArcade.

Submissions for the issue began on Nov. 1 and will continue through Feb. 28. Students can send prose, poetry, creative nonfiction and visual art to arcademagazine@gmail.com. Submissions should include no more than 3,000 words, five poems or three pieces of visual art.
