William “Bill” Miller, 90, of Warrensburg, died Thursday, March 3, at Western Missouri Medical Center.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time Saturday, March 5, at Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Louie Lowe officiating. Interment will follow in Warrensburg Memorial Gardens Cemetery with full military honors.

He was born Sept. 28, 1925 in Buffalo, Missouri, the son of Ellis Carl and Lillie O. (Haymes) Miller.

On Feb. 14, 1944 in Urbana, Missouri, he and Jewell Irene Hardison were married. Irene survives at the home.

Bill graduated high school in Urbana in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from Dec. 16, 1943, until January 1946. He served on the USS Rescue in the South Pacific as a pharmacist’s mate second class. He witnessed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender aboard the USS Missouri. After his service, he began farming with his parents, and later worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad as a switchman for ten years. He moved to Warrensburg in 1960 and worked as an MFA insurance agent for 25 years. He later worked for Coates Field Service as a right-of-way agent and retired in 1988.

Bill was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Warrensburg.

He is survived by his wife, Irene; a son, Tom Miller, of Clinton; daughter, Linda Eaton and husband, John, of Warrensburg; two grandchildren, Emily Whitehead, of Warrensburg, and Bill Eaton, of Fort Carson, Colorado; 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a great granddaughter, Addison Grace Eaton; two brothers, John Leland and Ellis Carl Miller, Jr.; and four sisters, Elinor Franklin, Marjorie Carter, Mary Belle Murphy and Martha Nelle Reuter.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Missouri Veterans Home and can be left in care of the funeral home.
