In the 1930s, jazz stars such as Count Basie, Miles Davis and Duke Ellington played at the Castle Ballroom, which is considered one of St. Louis’ last remaining buildings with historic connections to the city’s black community.

The building, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, was severely damaged by weather last year, which caused one of the walls to collapse.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/NX7hyA) some of the building’s owners in the last decade have been city and area leaders. But building records show no substantial improvements have been made on the building in the last decade.

The building was erected in 1908 and became a jazz venue by the 1930s.
