Eleanor Louise Gregg, 90, of Warrensburg, died early Sunday morning, Jan. 31, at her home.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1 p.m. until service time Wednesday, Feb. 3 at Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Heather Jepsen officiating. Interment will follow in Warrensburg Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
She was born Sept. 2, 1925, in Warrensburg, the daughter of Walter W. and Lyda Mae (Inman) Roop. She grew up on Broad Street playing with the Miller children across the street and having as much fun as kids could have during the Great Depression.
In 1947, she earned her baccalaureate degree from Central Missouri State College and her nickname, “Ducky.” Before graduation she had her sights set on one recently liberated P.O.W., Luther L. “Len” Gregg III, a B-17 pilot. Mission accomplished when they were married Aug. 14, 1949, in Warrensburg. He preceded her in death on December 18, 2011.
After a brief stent at the YWCA in Kansas City, Ducky began her teaching career in a one-room school housing grades 1-7 in Oak Grove, Missouri, in 1951. After time out for having Bethene in 1952 and Janis in 1955, Ducky began her 30-year career teaching physical education at Warrensburg High School. She supervised Pep Club and organized Tiger Club. In 1968, she earned a specialist degree in physical education. Ducky retired in 1985 to join her husband in the adventures of the RV trailer world.
Louise was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, Retired Teachers Association, and numerous bridge clubs.
Ducky kept her refreshing sense of humor and spunk until the day before she died. She was loving and loved. All those who knew her will miss her dearly. She had a knack for making unpleasant situations seem a lot better.
Ducky is survived by two daughters, Bethene Louise Gregg of Roeland Park, Kansas, and Janis Lynn Gregg and husband, Roger Dixon, of St. Augustine, Florida; three nephews, Jared Scott of Springfield, Missouri, Mark Pennak of Chevy Chase, Maryland, and Steve Pennak of Tacoma, Washington; and two nieces, Mary Ann Pratt of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and Lynn Crinic of Phoenix, Arizona.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church of Warrensburg and can be left in care of the funeral home.
