Career Services is offering a unique opportunity to prepare students for certain job interviews by teaching a few table manners.
The Etiquette Dinner Program is designed to help students understand the fine dining experience from what to eat to how to eat politely. The dinner is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Elliott Student Union Ballroom.
Lauren Shoemaker, a senior, attended the dinner last semester.
“The program taught me things that were never taught in the classroom or had thought about,” she said.
Amber Goreham, director of Career Services, said the program continues to grow every year. Goreham said the goal of the program goes beyond just knowing what fork to use. The program touches on who should pay, whether to order a drink and how much to tip.
Joni Porter, operations coordinator at Career Services, said big companies such as Cerner often do interviews over meals, and training students on basic etiquette can help them land the job. Porter said employers can tell if students have had etiquette training before.
The Etiquette Dinner includes a five-course meal from Sodex and is taught by a certified etiquette instructor.
Goreham students will learn skills for any formal or informal dining situation.
The cost is $20 with 43 spots out of a 100 remaining for the event.
Erica Miller, a senior, said she plans to attend.
“I am hoping to learn the correct way to put on a napkin and what to do if I do not like my food,” she said.
Students interested in the event must register through Handshake before Monday evening. Handshake can be accessed through students My Central login on the home page.
