Gene (Marion E.) Thompson, 77, of Warrensburg, Missouri, died Tuesday, April 17.Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 25, at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Warrensburg, with Pastor Brent Bullard and the Reverend Dr. Randy Neal officiating. Interment with military honors will follow the service at Adams Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Keith Sproat, Lowell Schmidli, Gary Haller, Larry Dillingham, Steve Weigand, and Mark Watts. Honorary pallbearers will be C L Ho dren, Clark Holdren, Steve Brace, Mason Wirsig, Rick Anderson, Jeff Phillips, Anna Dureka, Jim Seigfreid and Shane Fronczek.
The family received friends on Tuesday, April 24, from 6-8 p.m. at Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home.
Gene was born on Feb. 2, 1941, in Warrensburg, the son of Ernest and Martha (Pick) Thompson. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in Nov. of 1963, and was honorably discharged as a Technical Sergeant in June of 1965.
On January 15, 1965, he married Marilyn Bancroft in Leeton, Missouri, and to this union were born two daughters. He worked for the United Telephone Company for 24 years until his retirement. He was also a longtime member of Grover Park Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Marilyn; daughter, Sheila Jean Wilbanks and her husband, Terry; two granddaughters, Kennedy and Caelyn Wilbanks; sister, Martha Ann Richner; a step-sister, Jeanne Woods; Marie Thompson and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Theresa Kay Thompson; and his parents, Ernest and Martha Thompson.
Contributions are suggested to the Gene Thompson Memorial Ministry Fund and can be left in care of the funeral home.
