Hattie Mae Shelton

Hattie Mae Shelton, 82, of Mosby, Missouri, died Thursday, Jan. 14, at her daughter, Ann’s home in Warrensburg.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Mosby Baptist Church with Pastor Walt Snyder officiating. Interment will follow in  Providence Baptist Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Earnest Shelton, Shane Spratt, B. J. Spratt, Nick Spratt, Skylar Spratt and Ann Spratt.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Hattie was born Aug. 20, 1933, in Kansas City, Missouri. She was raised by her grandparents, Katie and Walter Ferrell. She attended Kearney High School. Hattie was united in marriage to Doyal Ray Shelton Sr. on April 15, 1955, in Mountain Home, Arkansas. The couple moved to Mosby in December 1954. She was a cook and bus driver for State School No. 9 for several years.

She served three terms as mayor of Mosby and she made many significant improvements to the town. She was known for going over the top when it came to holidays and all the decorating that goes along with them. Hattie and Doyal owned four lots in Mosby and she decorated all four of the lots for Christmas. They were also known for having family oriented New Years Eve parties at their home for many years. Hattie’s love of nature showed in her yard, which after her children were grown, was filled with beautiful flowers and trees along with multiple bird and squirrel feeders.

She was a member of Mosby Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years. Hattie’s hobbies included crochet, ceramics, painting and multiple other crafts. She enjoyed traveling with her family, fishing, gardening, and softball, which she played when she was in her 40s. She was also a member of “Main Street Mamas,” a group of gals who often walked around Mosby keeping an eye on things.

Survivors include two sons and two daughters, Anna May Spratt and significant other, Kenney Philemon, of Warrensburg, Missouri; Earnest Lee Shelton, of Mosby; Ronnie Len Shelton and wife, Tami, of Excelsior Springs, Missouri; and Rebecca Kay Shelton, of Kansas City, Kansas; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Barbara Joy, of the state of Washington; and a brother, Gerald Ferrell, of Cameron, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyal; two sons, Doyal Shelton Jr. and Bruce Del Shelton; and two great-great-grandchildren.

 

Memorial contributions are suggested to Johnson County Cancer Foundation or Johnson County Hospice.
