Mo. offering tax break on back-to-school shopping

(JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., AP) — Missouri’s annual sales tax holiday for back-to-school shopping is coming up.

The state Revenue Department says the break on the state sales tax on qualifying school supplies, computers and clothing takes place from 12:01 a.m. Friday until stores close on Sunday.

State law also permits local governments to waive their sales taxes, and many cities and counties do so. Acting Revenue Director John Mollenkamp says the combined state and local breaks can save shoppers 8 to 9 percent.

The state tax will be waived during the three-day period on limited purchases of clothing; personal computers and related devices costing up to $3,500; and items typically used in classrooms, such as notebooks, textbooks and backpacks.
