(HOUSTON, Texas) — The Central Missouri offense was held to just six hits and two runs in a 4-2 loss to Arkansas-Monticello on Monday afternoon at the Houston Winter Invitational at Minute Maid Park. The loss drops No. 19 Central Missouri’s record to 1-2 overall.
The Boll Weevils (3-0) scored all four of their runs in the first two innings off UCM starter Kurtis Schuyler (0-1). Austin Braddock hit a two-out solo home run in the first to give UAM a 1-0 lead.
D’Marco Poindexter roped a bases-loaded double to drive in a pair of runs in the second and the fourth run scored on a wild pitch.
The Mules got on the board in the third when Kevin Gratza‘s ground ball toward first hopped over the first baseman’s head into right field to bring home Brad Jelinek.
UCM added another run in the eighth when Barrett Noirfalise doubled in Brad Wilson. The Mules loaded the bases with two outs in the frame, but were unable to plate any more runs. The Mules left 11 runners on base in the game.
Schuyler took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in 5.1 innings. He was just one and struck out six. Zach Davis and Reece Ponak combined to toss 3.2 innings of two-hit relief with five punch outs.
Kade Garlington (1-0) got the win for the Boll Weevils allowing one run on three hits in six innings. He struck out four and walked three. Jeff Harvill picked up his first save of the season after recording the final four outs.
The Mules wrap up the season-opening Houston Winter Invitational on Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. against Winona State (1-2). The Central Missouri School of Graduate and Extended Studies Dugout Show begins at approximately 9:35 a.m.
