Norma Lee (Netz) Mills, 84, of Knob Noster, Missouri, died Sunday, April 17, at Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg, Missouri.
Visitation is scheduled for 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, at Sweeney-Philips and Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, April 21, at First Christian Church in Knob Noster, with burial to follow at Knob Noster Cemetery.
Norma was born March 10, 1932, in Glendale, Arizona, to Lauren and Hazel (Hanger) Netz. At three years of age upon the death of her mother, she was sent to live with relatives, Walter F.(Jake) and Daisy Hilton in Irving, Kansas. Although she was not surrendered for adoption, she was their child from then on.
She was reunited with her father and siblings during high school and graduated from Adrian High School in Missouri, Class of 1949. Norma enjoyed her relationships with her classmates through the years. She attended University of Central Missouri (then called Central Missouri State Teacher’s College) where she earned her teaching certification and taught for two years in rural schools in western Missouri.
In 1951, she and Walter Damon (Red) Mills were married in Adrian, Missouri. To this union of 65 years, four children were born. As a military family they resided in Nebraska, Missouri, Texas and North Carolina. They formed many dear and lasting friendships. They retired to Knob Noster and always claimed it as home. She was an active member of the community, a 50+ year member of First Christian Church, and former Alderwoman. She retired from Kendrick Insurance Agency.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings: Nellie (Netz) Dalton, Floyd Netz and Marvin Netz.
Norma is survived by her husband, Walter (Red) Mills; four children, Michael Mills and wife, Carolyn, of Columbia, Missouri,, Kay Stauffer and husband, Michael, of Knob Noster, Mark Mills and wife, Olga, of Atlanta, Georgia, and Melody Stephan and husband, Ron, of Lenexa, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Micah Stauffer and wife, Caroline, of Los Angeles, California, Jesse Stauffer-Baum and wife, Lisa, of Kansas City, Missouri, Andrew Stauffer and wife, Carley, of North Charleston, South Carolina, Elizabeth and Gregory Stephan of Lenexa, Kansas, and Kendall and Kasey Mills of Atlanta, Georgia. She had the joy to know two great-grandchildren, Aliana Valentina and Aria Belle Stauffer. She is also survived by her sister, Shirley (Netz) Kirby of Garden City, South Carolina, numerous dear relatives and a host of beloved friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to First Christian Church of Knob Noster or Show-Me Christian Youth Home and can be left in the care of Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home.
