(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – A UCM student recently started her own fitness class at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.
India Shaw, a senior community health major, said her #FitLife class offers a mixture of dance, Zumba and abs workouts.
Shaw said she started this class because she is majoring in health. She said she also wants to help people get their healthy life on track.
“With my degree, having to deal with nutrients and other health aspects,” Shaw said, “life changed, and I became interested with being healthy myself and helping others be healthy.”
Shaw said her main goal for #FitLife is to help people learn how to start working out on their own.
She said #FitLife is not just a workout class, but is also a health brand. Shaw uses Facebook and Instagram to promote her workout classes and her #FitLife smoothies.
“I sell three different types of smoothies,” Shaw said. “There’s a Strawberry Delight, Green Machine and a Mango Passion.”
Shaw charges $5 for the smoothies and uses fresh fruits and vegetables.
One of Shaw’s students, Marissa Taylor, said she has participated in the classes since they started at the beginning of the semester.
“It’s a lot of fun,” Taylor said. “You get some hard work in, feel sore the next day, but you’ll see improvement the more you go.”
#FitLife has many different playlists, from hip-hop to zumba.
“‘Bad and Boujee,’ a song by the Migos, is my favorite workout dance in the class,” Taylor said. “Even though it’s the hardest, it still gets the job done.”
Taylor said the class is open for women and men of all ages on or off campus.
“Yes, I would recommend this class to anyone,” Taylor said. “Boy or girl, at any age. It’s fun and it gets you in shape.”
Samantha Bruce, of Warrensburg, does not attend UCM but started attending #FitLife after learning about it from a co-worker.
“Being in this class, I’ve met some pretty amazing people,” Bruce said. “Our instructor is very helpful and patient with us when it comes to the work outs.”
The class takes place from 4-5 p.m. Tuesdays, 2-3 p.m. Thursdays, and noon-1 p.m. Saturdays.
Classes are available for $3 for each class, but gym passes are available for $25 for the semester.
