Sharell Middleton has knitted 210 tiny caps for infants at Children’s Mercy Hospital to help commemorate the American Heart Association’s Heart Month, according to a press release from Care Connection for Aging Services.
She is a participant at the Care Connection Warrensburg Senior Center and crafted
the hats as part of the American Heart Association’s “Little Hats, Big Hearts” campaign.
Middleton said she knits the hats because she wanted a volunteer activity to keep her busy and there is a lot of heart disease in her family.
Since it started in 2014, the campaign has distributed more than 100,000 hats to families of newborns at hospitals in more than 40 U.S. states, according to the press release. CCA Services and Middleton have participated in the campaign for the past three years. While Middleton did not meet her goal to knit a hat a day last year, for 365 total, she is not deterred. She already has started on her tally for this year, with the same goal of knitting at least one every single day.
