It may have been warm enough to only wear a jacket in December, but the new year has brought in cold enough weather that you finally need a coat. Unfortunately, not everyone is able to bundle up and keep warm this winter, but there are ways you can help.
If you bought or were gifted a new coat this past holiday season, chances are you have an old one lying around. Instead of banishing it in the coat closet where it’ll get no use, consider donating it along with other winter necessities, to someone in Warrensburg who could use it.
The Survival House and the Destiny House are two locations always needing donations. The Survival House, located at 137 E. Culton St., is an adult abuse center that provides domestic and sexual abuse victims with shelter and supportive services. They accept donations from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The Destiny House, located at 208 Emerson St., aims to provide sheltering services to any adult in need. They supply meals, a place to sleep, shower access and laundry facilities. They accept donations seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Another place you can donate is the Salvation Army, located at 123 N. Holden St. College students, families and individuals around the community can go here to get their winter essentials for cheap. Plus, proceeds from the sales go to help fund their adult rehabilitation centers, so it’s a win-win!
Lastly, drop off your unused coats, jackets, scarves and more in the blue bins you see around town. These bins are from the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, and they use your donated items to support children in Johnson County.
They can even come by your apartment to pick up the items you want donated! All you have to do is schedule an appointment by calling 660-429-1991 and place your donation on the curb or your front step, making sure everything is bagged and able to be lifted by one person.
This winter, don’t let your unused clothes and coats sit in your closet when they could be donated to someone who needs them.
