Wynona Mae Corbin, 81, of Warrensburg, died Saturday, Jan. 16, at Warrensburg Manor Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, at Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home with Brother Todd Griffith officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery north of Warrensburg. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Eddie, Cody, AJ, and Jessie Corbin, Taylor Rickard, Patrick Berube, William Hutcheson, and Jason Burden.
She was born Oct. 20, 1934, in Kismet, Kansas, the daughter of John Adam and Evelyn “Correll” Lee.
She and Carlos Wayne Corbin were married on May 18, 1954, in Boliver, Missouri. He preceded her in death on July 22, 1998.
Wynona loved the outdoors. She loved gardening, yard work, playing kickball and basketball with the grandkids and great-grandkids and riding horses. During the winter months, she enjoyed putting together puzzles and quilting. She was a very talented seamstress, making everything from prom/wedding dresses to customized family quilts. She was an excellent cook. Among the family favorites were biscuits and gravy, apple butter, apple goodie, and peanut butter cookies.
She loved her church and church family. She was a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church for 45 years. She lived her beliefs by always keeping and putting others first. She especially enjoyed helping with Bible school. She loved working with children and spent 13 years as a foster grandparent at Crest Ridge Elementary School. She loved going to school every day where she was affectionately known at Grandma C. On May 8, 2013, she was one of 35 people statewide to receive the Senior Service Award in recognition of her volunteer efforts.
The minute you stepped into her house you knew that her true passion in life was her family. She had wall to wall pictures of her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids, as well as 15+ photo albums from years of family gatherings. She was a remarkable woman who always wore a warm smile, and set a good example to all who knew her. She was loved and will be missed.
She is survived by a son, DeWayne Corbin, of Kingsville; three daughters, Wanda Rickard and husband Rick, of Basehor, Kansas, Sherry Corbin and husband, Keith Schulz, of Warrensburg, and Brenda Corbin of Warrensburg; a sister-in-law, Oneta Lee of Madison, Tennessee; twelve grandchildren, Eddie, Caitlin, AJ, Cody, and Jessie Corbin, Nicole Berube, Ashley Salyer, Taylor Rickard, Barbara Forgey, Tiffany Hutcheson, Keith Schulz, Jr., and Jacquelyn Craddock; and eleven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Jimmie Ray Corbin on April 25, 2008, and one brother, Tommy Lee.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Mount Zion Baptist Church and can be left in care of the funeral home.
