Jennies Basketball falls on the road to Quincy 68-65

(QUINCY, Ill.) — The Jennies basketball team wrapped up nonconference play with a 68-65 loss Saturday afternoon to the Quincy Hawks.

The Jens got on the scoreboard first when Ashley Duffy hit a three-pointer 18 seconds into the game. A layup from Danielle Barry gave the Jennies a 5-2 lead, the layup would be the final field goal of the first period for the Jens. Barry hit a free throw with 4:08 left in the first period to cut the Hawk’s lead to 8-6. The Hawks then went on an 8-0 run to hold a 16-6 lead at the end of the first period.

Quincy went up 21-6 before the Jens began to chip away at the lead. A jumper from Ashley Jones kicked off an 11-1 run that cut the Quincy lead to 22-17 with 5:25 left in the half. The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the second period and the Hawks held a 32-26 lead heading into halftime.

Andee Wahlert started the scoring in the second half with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to three with 8:32 left in the third period. Tayler Weiks hit another three-pointer to tie the game at 36 with 6:14 left in the period. The Jens regained the lead with 4:52 left in the period when Wahlert drained another three-pointer. Quincy retook the lead on a pair of free throws, but the Jennies answered back with a three-pointer from Shelby Winkelmann to take a 42-40 lead. The Jens then went on a 12-2 run to jump out to a 52-42 lead. Quncy ended the third period with four straight points and the Jennies held a 52-46 lead heading into the fourth period.

Quincy scored first in the fourth period, but Central Missouri answered with a layup and a pair of free throws to take a 56-48 lead. The Hawks then used a 15-2 run to take a 63-58 lead with 2:50 left in the game. A pair of free throws from Jones and a three-pointer from Weiks tied the game at 63 with one minute left. A free throw gave the Hawks the lead for good, and Quincy would go on to win the game 68-65.

Shelby Winkelmann led the Jennies in scoring with 17 points, and added four rebounds in 25 minutes of action. Cierra Gaines led the team in rebounds with eight.

The Jennies (1-4) are back in action Wednesday evening at 5:30 in their MIAA opener against Missouri Western.
