Mules wrestling places six at Luther Hill Invitational

(INDIANOLA, Iowa) — The Mules wrestling team had six wrestlers place in the top six in their weight classes at the Luther Hill Invitational at Simpson College on Saturday afternoon.

Nick Lovejoy was the top finisher for the Mules, placing second at 285 pounds. Lovejoy started his day with a 16-0 technical fall over Tyler Styrk of William Penn. In the second round, he won by tie-breaker, 5-2, over Kirk Owens of Coe College. In the semifinals, Lovejoy pinned Colby Vlieger of Simpson College in 4:15. Lovejoy lost the championship match to Dean Broghammer of Grand View by technical fall.

Archie Williams placed third at 174 pounds at the tournament. Williams started his day with a 17-0 technical fall victory over Tyler Foubert of William Penn, and then followed that up with a victory over Joseph Robinson of Lindenwood-Belleville in a 5-2 decision. In the semifinals, Williams was pinned by Vicente Guerrero of Graceland. In the consolation bracket, Williams pinned Aaron Gauff of Lindenwood-Belleville in 2:03 to advance to the third-place match. In his final match of the day, Williams won a 7-5 decision over Derrick Huber of Grand View to place third in the weight class.

Daide Agnew finished fourth at 133 pounds. Angew opened his day with a 14-5 major decision over Jeremy Andujar of William Penn. In the second round, Agnew won a 14-13 decision over Ryan Schmalen of Upper Iowa. In the semifinals, Agnew was pinned by Godwin Cutler of Grand View. In the consolation bracket, Agnew defeated Lincoln Monroe in a 9-6 decision. In his final match of the day, Agnew was pinned by Mike Gussarson of Coe.

At 197 pounds, Robert Schneider placed fifth. Schneider lost to Derrick Hawkins of Grand View by major decision in the first round. In the consolation bracket, Schneider received a bye in the first round, and pinned Aaron Allen of William Penn in 1:23. In the third round of the consolation bracket, Schneider pinned Ethan Leighton of Grand View in 4:03. Schneider wrestled Hawkins again in the consolation semifinals and lost by major decision once again. In the fifth-place match, Schneider pinned Matt Schirado of Dakota Wesleyan in 1:39.

Mike Boyd wrestled at 184 pounds and placed fifth on the day. He started the day with a 5-4 decision victory over Garrett Kelson of Coe. In the second round, Boyd pinned Casey Crawford of Grand View in 1:40 to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinals, Josh Allen of Coe won in sudden victory. In the cosolation bracket, Boyd lost a 4-1 decision to Casey Rohret of Coe. In the fifth-place match, Boyd defeated teammate Grant Sparks in a 7-2 decision.

Grant Sparks also wrestled at 184 pounds and placed sixth in the tournament. Sparks was pinned in the first round by Damonte Stogner of Grand View. In the consolation bracket, Sparks defeated Brock Sorenson of Upper Iowa in a 16-0 technical fall. He followed that up with a 13-0 major decision victory over Nathyn Sierra of William Penn. In the consolation third round match, Sparks won by tech fall, 17-2, over Casey Crawford of Grand View to advance to the consolation semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, Sparks lost a 2-1 decision to Stogner. In the fifth-place match, Sparks lost to teammate Mike Boyd.
