(PUEBLO, Colo.) – Three members of the UCM track and field squads earned All-American honors, as eight athletes saw action during the second day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Three athletes earned third-place finishes, including senior Brent Vogel in the decathlon, junior Zoe Sharplin in the heptathlon, and sophomore Brooke Swearingin in the discus.

Vogel started the day in third place through five events, with 3,877 points. The senior finished third in the 100-meter hurdles to kick off action on Friday, posting a time of 14.56. A 10th place throw of 115-6 in the discus dropped the Jefferson City native to fourth overall, but after finishing second in the pole vault by clearing the bar at 15-1 pushed Vogel ahead to third with 6,138 points with two events to go.

In the javelin, Vogel slipped farther from the top two contenders, placing eighth with a throw of 165-11 on his third and final attempt. In his final multi-event competition for UCM, Vogel clinched a third-place result with a time of 4:44.95 in the 1,500 meter-run for a total of 7,384 points in the decathlon.

Sharplin came into the second day of competition in fourth place in the heptathlon, with three events remaining. The junior opened the heptathlon with an eighth-place result in the long jump with a leap of 17-6.75. With a second-place finish in the javelin, throwing for 128-2, Sharplin sat in third place overall and with one event remaining, was only eight points out of the overall lead.

Sharplin’s national title bid fell short in the 800-meter run, posting a time of 2:34.85 to place 11th. The Wurtulla, Australia, native totaled 5,161 points to earn All-American honors.

Freshman Victoria Jackson finished 16th in her first national title appearance, collecting 4,489 points.

In the women’s discus, sophomore Brooke Swearingin earned her second career All-American award with a third-place finish. The Odessa native posted her best throw on her final attempt of 169-5.

Junior Devin Claypool competed in the men’s high jump, but was unable to clear the starting height of 6-8.75 and finished in a tie for 14^th place.

In preliminary action, freshman Kellin Loch posted the second fastest time in the 800-meter run prelims, placing second in his heat with a time of 1:51.13. Loch will be the only freshman in the field of nine athletes in Saturday’s final heat.

The men’s 4×400 meter relay also ran its preliminary heat, finishing 11th overall with a time of 3:11.95, failing to qualify for Saturday’s final.

With one day of competition remaining, the Mules were in a tie for 22nd with six points, while the Jennies are ninth overall in the women’s standings, with 12 points.
