Dana Rae (Hough) Briscoe, 82, died Sunday, April 6, in the company of her husband and family. A life-long resident of the Holden area, some have noted “Dana does not have a boastful bone in her body,” but she leaves a notable legacy to her community.
Visitation will be 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at Ben Cast & Son – Wood Funeral Home, Holden, Mo. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, at the funeral home with Pastor Don Slone officiating. Memorial contributions are suggested to Kansas City Hospice House.
Dana was vice-president of Holden High School class of 1949, and graduated as the class salutatorian and continued to be actively engaged in all aspects of community life. As a 4-H leader she shaped the lives of countless children. Dana was a member of the Enon Baptist Church actively involved in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and any key committee that needed her time and talents.
She was an avid gardener and a member of the Holden Garden Club adding to the beauty of Holden and supporting the annual Fall Fiesta events. She also served on the Postal Service’s local Quality of Working Life (QWL) committee, was an active member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and served on the Johnson County Extension Council.
As a dedicated dairy farmer’s wife, Dana took care of the milking chores for many years and when the dairy role ended, she became a rural mail carrier for over 19 years.
Dana was preceded in death by an infant son, James Allen Briscoe, and by brothers, Dennis and Hurley Hough.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Norman Lee Briscoe; four children, son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Sandra Briscoe, Pooler, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Debbie Briscoe, Holden, Mo.; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Gary Strate, Holden; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Chip Sharp, Rocheport, Mo.; eight grandchildlren, Christie Zarkovich (Eric), Bryan Briscoe (Carrie), Sara Lohe (Andy), Martha Bennett (Jake), Traci Strate (John), Daniel Strate, Megan Oberg (Nathan), Brittany Sharp; and seven great-grandchildren, Bailey, Emma, Jackson, Henry, Addie, Josie and Jacob.
