(MARYVILLE, Mo.) — The University of Central Missouri track and field program saw the Jennies take third place and the Mules take fourth place at the MIAA Outdoor Championships.
During the three-day event, seven individuals and one relay team were crowned MIAA champions. The women’s team scored 127 points while the men finished with 94 points.
Caniggia Raynor was a two-time champion in the hammer throw and discus. He won the discus on day two with a mark of 181-3. He then won the hammer throw on day three, throwing 218-3. Raynor has entered six MIAA Championship events in his two years at UCM and won them all.
Heavin Warner took third place in the shot put throwing 48-11.75. She also finished second in the discus (171-5) and became a three-time MIAA Champion in the hammer throw (202-5). Her win in the hammer throw gives her 11 career MIAA Championships.
Two more Mules finished second in their throwing events. Jacob Mahin took second in the shot put with a throw of 56-9.25. Chris Swearingin battled a strong wind to place second in the javelin throwing 210-4. Mahin also placed fifth on day two in the discus throwing 159-4.
Brittany Kallenberger and Cole Phillips each won the pole vault on day two. Kallenberger jumped 12-8.75 while Phillips cleared 16-8.75. Kallenberger then took fourth place in the high jump on day three, clearing 5-7.75.
The meet started with the of the multi-events. Blake Seitz took second for the Mules scoring a personal-best 7137 in the decathlon, an NCAA automatic qualifying mark. He won the javelin event, throwing 202-4.75, second farthest in UCM history. Three others also scored for the Mules in the decathlon. Daniel McCarty and Hassan Ilyas provisionally qualified for the national meet. McCarty took fourth with a score of 6584 while Hassan Ilyas placed fifth with a score of 6261. Elias Roelfsema finished seventh, scoring 5458 points. Seitz then placed eighth in the open javelin, throwing 182-6.
For the Jennies, Victoria Jackson and Katie Cassidy took third and fourth in the heptathlon. They both set personal-bests with Jackson scoring 5,059 and Cassidy scoring 5,008 points. Jackson won the javelin throwing 134 feet, third best ever at UCM. Cassidy was second in the long jump, jumping 18-7.25, putting her in the UCM all-time top 10. Cassidy Harris also scored for the Jennies in the heptathlon with a two-day total of 4553 points. All three scores are NCAA provisional qualifying scores.
Jackson also finished in eighth place in two individual events, the long jump (18-7.25) and the 100-meter hurdles (14.61). She also competed in the shot put and javelin on day three.
Both the Mules and Jennies relay squads had strong days. The Jennies 4×100 relay team set a new school record at 46.80, an NCAA provisional mark and placed fourth, and the 4×400 team won the MIAA Championship in 3:47.76. Both relay teams were comprised of Katie Cassidy, Nikki Douglas, Kailey Fuchs and Emily Thole.
The Mules relays both set season-best times. The 4×400 relay with Marquis Jones, Corbin Lowe, Jacob Randle and Osvaldo Granillo took second place running 3:13.12. The 4×100 team with Jones, Lowe, Brendan Black and Granillo placed sixth running 41.84.
Two Jennies won individual events on the track. Jana Palmowski won the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running 10:35.79. She also finished fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:19.69.
Nikki Douglas won her first 400-meter MIAA Championship. She ran a season-best 59.84, which is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. She also took second place in the 100, running 11.90 in both the prelims and the finals. Douglas was seeded fourth after the preliminary round.
The Mules and Jennies each had a top finisher in the 400. Granillo took fourth place, running a personal-best 47.92 and Thole was sixth in 57.39.
Pittsburg State was the women’s team champion scoring 170 points and Missouri Southern were the winners on the men’s side with 145 points.
Notables:
Haley Heuer aided the throws team with fifth place finishes in the shot put (42-2-.75) and discus (144).
Kaylee VanBlarcum placed sixth in the pole vault with a jump of 11-9 and Colton Bray was 14th in 14-9.
Jacob Randle took eighth place in the 800 in 1:58.82. His 1:52.56 time in the prelims was a personal-best.
Drew Bodicky finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles running 54.96. He ran a personal-best 54.84 in the prelims.
John Berry finished eighth the hammer throw with a 163-5 mark.
Omari McDonald was the Mules top-finisher in the 100, running 10.85 in the preliminary round.
Allie Rexroat took seventh place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:41.67.
Ty Hughes finished ninth in the 5,000, running 15:18.85. Jami Clay ran 19:12.40 in the event to finish 13th.
In the 10,000-meter on day one, Michael Gawlick ran 31:41.94 and finished seventh. Stephanie Boan also placed seventh, running 39:22.19.
Amy Marx and Kenny Froebe both set personal-bests and placed 14th in the 1500-meter run. Marx ran a 4:58.51 and Froebe crossed the line in 4:06.19.
Marquis Jones was UCM’s top finisher in the 200, running 22.22 in the preliminary round.
Eli Leavell was the Mules’ top finisher in the long and triple jumps. He took 14th place in both events, jumping 21-10 in the long jump and 44-4.25 in the triple jump.
