(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) — The Jennies softball team rebounded from its two losses on Saturday to drop MIAA rival, Northeastern State, 2-1 and 16-8 in six innings on Sunday afternoon at the South Recreation Complex.

The Jennies (19-13, 7-5 MIAA) used a two-run seventh to take game one and a five-run sixth to end the second game.

In game one, the Jennies fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning after three consecutive two-out singles put the RiverHawks on the scoreboard.

UCM managed just four hits in the first six innings, but found some late-game magic in the last of the seventh. After Lauren Mabe led off the inning with a double, Ali Jo Rogerssingled back up the middle, bringing around pinch-runner Brittany Knabe to tie the game at 1-1. After pinch-hitter Alex Leonhart worked a walk, Braylyn Bivens laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Rogers to third and Leonhart to second.

The next batter, Alex Groeger hit a groundball to the shortstop whose throw to homeplate was too late, giving the Jennies the 2-1 victory.

Jennies starter Jakki Prater earned the win to improve to 12-6. She went the distance, allowing six hits on an run (earned) and struck out three batters. Prater, along with Bivens, both collected two hits in game one.

In game two, Northeastern State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a three-run home run off the bat of Saharra Henson.

UCM came back with four runs of its own in the home half of the first, the first run coming via a fielding error by the shortstop. With the bases loaded, Mabe hit into a fielder’s choice scoring Groeger to make it a 3-2 game. Kristen Heil followed with a two-run double and Rogers ended the scoring output with an RBI single to right field to give the Jennies the lead at 5-3.

UCM added a sixth run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly from Jessica Neely.

Keelia Martin knocked home a run on single in the bottom of the third, followed by a sacrifice fly by Bivens, providing UCM with an 8-3 lead. Groeger followed with a two-run shot to center to blow the game open at 10-3.

Northeastern State scored once in the top of the fourth on a leadoff home run by Navada Campos, slicing the Jennies’ lead to 10-4.

In the bottom of the fifth, UCM got the run back following back-to-back hits from Rogers (double) and Emily King (single) to lead off the inning.

The RiverHawks scored four times in the top of the sixth on a two-run double from Alyssa Aguilar and a two-run homer by Allyson Pogue.

A five-run sixth inning by the Jennies ended the game. Neely led off with a single and came home on a two-run home run by Mabe. With Rogers on second base, who reached on an error, Bivens singled her home, putting the tally at 14-8.

The next batter, Groeger singled up the middle, advancing Bivens to second for the following hitter, Lindsey Dawson.

Dawson laced a double, plating Bivens and Groeger to secure the victory.

Katie Shockley (6-2) earned the win after coming on in relief for Jessica Wilkes. Shockley finished the final three innings, allowing three hits on four runs (none earned). She walked two and struck out seven.

The Jennies’ 1-through-3 hitters went a combined 9-for-13 with a homerun, seven RBI’s and seven runs scored in game two.

UCM will next play at Washburn at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, for doubleheader.
