Mules split doubleheader with Central Oklahoma

(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) — The Mules baseball team got a walk-off win in game one of their doubleheader with Central Oklahoma, but dropped the nightcap to split on Saturday afternoon at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field. UCM won the opener 3-2, but fell 6-4 in game two.

The Mules (14-14, 10-9 MIAA) got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the first inning in the opener. Trevor Jones led off with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.

Jake Alexander added an RBI sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the third and UCM led 2-0. The Bronchos (11-15, 7-11 MIAA) tied the game with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth. A UCM error allowed the inning to continue and Jacob Borrego had an RBI single and Dilon Argo an RBI double to tie the game.

The Mules loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a single and a pair of intentional walks. Jackson Schnurbusch stepped to the plate and ripped a full-count pitch to right for the walkoff single to give UCM the win.

Lucas Williams (4-2) earned the win in relief for the Mules after tossing two innings of one-hit relief. He pitched out of a second and third jam with one out in the sixth to keep the score tied. Starter Tyler House pitched five solid innings allowing two unearned runs on seven hits. He struck out four and walked just one.

Daulton Leiker (1-2) took the loss for UCO after giving up three runs on four hits in 6.1 innings pitched.

UCM jumped on top in game two with three first inning runs. Alexander had an RBI groundout to score Trevor Jones.Dylan Farrell added an RBI single and B. Oliver added an RBI triple.

The Bronchos came right back with five runs of their own in the top of the second to take the lead for good. The big blow was a grand slam off the bat of Tyler Hatcher. UCM got a run back in the fourth on B. Oliver’s first home run of the season to pull within 5-4, but UCO scored a run in the sixth on Chris Lobato’s sacrifice fly to extend the lead back to 6-4.

Jake Heissler (2-1) suffered his first loss of the year for UCM after givingup five runs on six hits in 1.1 innings. Grant Gavin tossed 4.2 innings of relief giving up one run on two hits. Austin Southmayd pitched one inning of relief allowing one hit.

Brent Backlund (3-1) earned the game two win for the Bronchos after allowing four runs on six hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out four. Tanner Ferrell pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn his second save of the season.

The series will wrap up on Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m. The game can be heard live on 1450 KOKO, 98.5 The Bar and warrensburgradio.com with Bob Jackson on the call.
