Winkelmann nets 1,000th career point in comeback win

(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – Central Missouri overcame a 14-point, second-half deficit Saturday afternoon to defeat Nebraska-Kearney 64-62.

The win moves UCM to 3-7 on the season and 2-2 in the MIAA.

Senior guard Shelby Winkelmann led the team with a season-high 27 points. She also became the 25th Jennie to record 1,000 career points with a layup in the third period.

Trailing by 12 at halftime, UCM held the Lopers to just 21 second half points and only four in the final frame as they made their comeback.

Ashley Duffy finished with 10 points, scoring six in the final period. Ashley Jones chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds. Jones also led the team with three assists.

Central Missouri played strong under the basket, outrebounding the Lopers 36-31 and 38 points in the paint to UNK’s 18. The Jennies also put back 14 second-chance points while Nebraska-Kearney only had two.

After a pair of Winkelmann free throws tied the game at 11-11 in the first period, UNK closed the stanza on an 11-0 run and taking a 22-11 lead after one.

The two teams traded baskets in the second period and UNK pushed their lead to 12 heading into intermission, 41-29.

UCM slowly chipped away at the Loper lead after the break. A Winkelmann jumper with just over a minute remaining cut the lead to six, but UNK ended the period with a three from Alexa Hogberg, to take a nine point lead into the final quarter, 59-50.

That’s when the Jennies came alive, outscoring the Lopers 15-4 in the frame, getting nine points from Winkelmann and six from Duffy.

The Jens began to make their run with six and a half minutes remaining, getting a layup and a three-pointer from Duffy. A jumper from Winkelmann brought the lead down to one and she gave the Jennies their first lead of the game with a three-point play the hard way, with two minutes remaining.

Duffy extended the lead to three, hitting one of two from the free throw line, but the Lopers got back to within one on their next possession with a layup from McKenzie Brown.

After getting fouled, Winkelmann made one of two from the line and the Lopers couldn’t get a shot off in the final seconds as the Jennies walked away with a 64-62 come-from-behind victory.

Laramey Becker and Brown led the Lopers, scoring 20 points. Hogberg added another 10 and Courtney Aitken pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

The Jennies are off for the remainder of 2015. They’ll return after the New Year to complete their three-game home stand. They host Southwest Baptist Jan. 4 with a 5:30 p.m. tip.
